Sierra Leone: Radiation Protection Board Trains Industrial Workers

Freetown — The Radiation Protection Board Secretariat has completed a two-day training session for technicians, engineers and safety officers at the WBHO and Dawnus construction sites at Bumbuna and Rogbere respectively. The training was part of an ongoing sensitization programme for occupationally exposed workers in the mines.

Executive secretary of the secretariat, Josephus Kongo, said the training was part of the secretariat's mandate to inform the users of these equipments of the risks involved. He said the use of these equipments, though helping to make their work simple, also poses some risks which can be minimised. He advised the workers to take precautionary measures to minimise the risk.

Mr. Kongo also informed the trainees that the risk involved in the use of ionizing radiation sources was the reason behind the establishment of the board and its secretariat. He further explained that the accidents involved in the use of these devices were both short and long term but that they can be avoided if they were adequately trained and safety precautions taken.

Deputy executive secretary, John Jabati, told the trainees that while they were doing their duties they should take into consideration members of the public. He said they must inform the indigenes that they should avoid areas where they see the radiation symbols.

Scientific officers Abdulai A. Kargbo and Umar Bun-Tejan also informed the trainees that the safety, security and transport of the radioactive devices were very important and that precaution should be taken in transporting and ensure that the areas that these devices are used and stored should be clearly demarcated with the presence of the radiation symbols.

APC Man Boosts Cleaning of Constituency 101

Freetown — Contender for the All People's Congress (APC) parliamentary symbol has boosted the regular cleaning exercise in Constituency 101 by donating tools for the exercise.

Presenting the items on behalf of Danfa William Kabia currently based in the United States, coordinator Abdul Osaio Kamara said "the young man has deep interest in improving the health status of his people, hence his focus on cleaning the environment".

According to him, malaria and typhoid cases were very much common in the area due to poor sanitation. He said youths in the constituency were finding it difficult to undertake such an exercise as result of many challenges including lack of tools and finance.

Kamara noted that the gesture was geared towards complementing the President's agenda for change and one that would benefit the society as a whole. He described Kabia as "a development-oriented young man with the zest to maximize the status of his people".

The items donated included shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows and aprons. They were received on behalf of the constituency by a youth group known as 'Real Friends', which is undertaking the cleaning exercise in the community.

President of the group, Lahai B. Swarray, expressed his total appreciation for the gesture, saying, "We were faced with lots of challenges to go about cleaning the community but we are happy that the young man has come to our aid and this will take us a long way in actualizing our dream."

Swarray encouraged the All People's Congress to award the party symbol to Kabia to enable him contest the 2012 parliamentary election. He pledged his group's total support for the proposed candidate when the time of voting comes.

"These are the type of leaders we are yearning for. We have been deceived by other politicians but the young man has proved beyond all reasonable doubt that he is ready to champion the cause of his people," he said.

we are currently auditioning for a Talent Competition for Young People from Sierra Leone.

We are holding an open call on Sunday 13th March, 2011 between 2pm – 7 pm at Newham youth centre, 1 Woodford Road Forest Gate E7 0DH

At present, we are looking for the following:

Young People between the ages of:
10 and below
11-18.
With talent in various fields; dancing, singing, drumming, poetry reading, story telling, instruments, you name it… The theme is “SALONE…land that we love”


NO PREVIOUS ACTING or stage EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY
(just a willingness to come along and try out, nothing ventured nothing gained.) At this stage it will just be a short informal chat, and we can tell you more about the process.
